Meet Captain Ron.

Capt. Ron Baker started fishing with his dad when he was five years old, on the Redondo Beach Pier in Redondo Beach, Calif. where they would try to fish at least twice a week. Ron's dad also enjoyed surf fishing on the beaches of Hermosa Beach, Calif. and he introduced seven year old Ron to a fishery that he still has a passion for today. Ron graduated from Redondo High in 1962 and, with deep roots to the fishing community, he immediately went to work in the sportfishing industry. Ron's first job was with Capt. Dick Helgren on the F/V Electra, running out of Norm’s Landing in San Pedro, Calif. Ron got his Captain’s license in 1967 and started running the Cat Special with Capt. Bob McMasters, out of Ventura Sportfishing in Ventura, Calif. and Fisherman’s Landing in San Diego. In 1978 Ron began commercial fishing and moved to Morro Bay, Calif. with his wife Sue and oldest son Alan. 5 years later Neal was born. Ron was very successful in his commercial ventures and was the #1 producer of domestic albacore for Chicken of the Sea in 1982.
Ron's wife Sue passed away in 1991 and Ron returned to sportfishing. He moved to Oceanside, Calif. with his two boys Alan and Neal and went back to work for Dick Helgren at Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing. In 1995, Capt. Ron started Fish Talk Radio, a highly rated fishing talk show. When Ron aired his first show he dedicated the show to kids. Capt. Ron and Fish Talk Radio started a series of kids’ fishing derbies all over Southern California and he continues to do them today. Capt. Ron has hosted the Lake Poway Youth Derby for 13years. This year’s event was attended by over 600 kids who had lots of fish, a lot of prizes, lots of smiles, and lots of fun. A GREAT FAMILY DAY!!! These days, Ron runs the Point Loma, a 3/4 day Sportfishing boat out of Point Loma Sportfishing in San Diego, Calif. and Capt. Ron also has a nearshore guide service called Dialed In Guide Service.
Capt. Ron recently applied for a grant from the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Commission to host a youth fishing derby on the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach Calif. It was fully funded and we look forward to it as another great kids’ event. Capt. Ron's passion for teaching kids to fish is second to none!
Ron remarried in 2003 to Deena Nelson, a fisherwoman and fishing world record holder in her own right. They met on Fish Talk Radio. You can find Capt. Ron and Deena on any given day fishing their Triumph Bay boat along the coast, in the bays or maybe even on a long range trip on one of San Diego’s deluxe sportfishers. Deena shares Captain Ron’s passion for teaching kids to fish and helps on all of his kids’ derbies.
Capt. Ron is looking forward to hosting the Crystal Pier Kids’ Classic in August along with 3 of his peers and sponsors who share his passion for teaching kids to fish. With over 25 kids events hosted by Capt. Ron, this event on the Crystal Pier is going to put a smile on every kid’s face… Mom’s and Dad’s too!
Capt. Ron lives in Lakeside, Calif. with Deena, who is both his wife and his fishing buddy. They continue to be very active in the fishing industry. As Ron always says, “Take a Kid Fishing.”
